Caran d’Ache is a Swiss manufacturer of writing and Art Supplies and has been creating the finest artists quality pens and pencils since 1915. Arnold Schweitzer established the first pencil factory in Geneva in 1915 with the mountains of Switzerland providing bountiful supplies of Graphite. In 1924 the company took the name Caran d’Ache which was the pseudonym of the 19th Century French satirist and political cartoonist Emmanuel Poiré. He is thought to be the predecessor of the comic strip we know today. Russian born Poiré took his penname from “Karandash” meaning pencil in Russian with its origin being the Turkish “kara tash” meaning black stone as in natural graphite. Caran d’Ache continues to be manufactured in Switzerland and is world renowned for providing artists with products of technical excellence and superior quality. Caran d’Ache use high quality materials, lightfast pigments and traditional craftsmanship to bring us some of the most innovative pen and pencil ranges on the market.
