Derwent Cumberland Pencil Company was the very first pencil manufacturer in Britain and has been producing the finest quality pencils since 1832. Derwent and indeed artists worldwide, have a violent storm in the Cumberland area in the early 1500’s to thank for today’s humble pencil. The storm had uprooted a number of trees revealing an unknown black substance which we now know as graphite. This was found to be ideal for marking sheep and pencil making began with the first factory opening in 1832. Now owned by Acco Brands this Derwent factory continues to produce world renowned drawing materials. Derwent is where tradition meets innovation. They are equally proud of their heritage as they are of their reputation. Their dedication to the creation of high quality drawing media has made the pencil the creative tool it is today. Artists continue to trust the timeless Derwent Pencil ranges of Artists, Graphic and Watercolour while being inspired by exciting new products such as the vibrant Inktense, Graphitint and Artbar.
